Title: An Internet and Intranet based Solutions for Managing the Bibliographic References
By: Mr. Sanjo Jose      Guide: Mr. Francis Jayakanth

An attempt to investigate the pros and cons of two possible solutions for managing the bibliographic references for the research community of Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) was made in this project.

One is the Internet-based solution - EndNote Web, which has been integrated with the Web of Science (WoS) database. Since IISc has subscription to the WoS database, IISc researchers can make use of Endnote Web for managing their bibliographic reference. Many a times, the Internet connectivity in the campus is quite slow. This factor could discourage the researchers in making use of Endnote Web.

The second possible solution that has been explored is setting up a web-based bibliographic reference management system using popular, open source software called Aigaion, on a local Intranet server. This solution will be devoid of issues related to slow connectivity and number of simultaneous accesses. Aigaion has been implemented on the IISc intranet as a part of Scigate portal (Click to login to Aigaion) to evaluate its usefulness to the IISc community for managing their bibliographic references.

Title: Long-Term Preservation and Perpetual Access to Scholarly Content: The LOCKSS way
By: Mr. Obaiah B.     Guide: Mr. Francis Jayakanth

Long-term preservation of library collections is very crucial. A modern research library's collection comprises of, among other things, printed materials, online electronic resources and locally developed digital library collections. Preserving printing materials does not pose too much of a challenge. However, long-term preservation of digital resources is certainly a great challenge. Also, library users cannot take it for granted the continued access to the online resources to which a library presently has subscription. This is because the subscription may discontinue or a publisher may discontinue particular title. When such a situation arises, the library users will be denied of access to the specific volumes and issues to which the library had paid subscription. To address the situation, researchers at the Stanford University have developed a software tool called the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe). This tool can help in facilitating continued access to the journals, which have either ceased or subscription to it has been discontinued. In this project, we have made an attempt to setup a prototype LOCKSS system to demonstrate the concept.

Title: Deployment of Knowledge Management in Safran Aerospace India (SAI)
By: Mr. Pradeep Kumar UM      Guide: Mr. Manu Rajan

Knowledge management is based on the idea that an organisation's most valuable resource is the knowledge of its people. Therefore, the extent to which an organisation performs well, will depend, among other things, on how effectively its people can create new knowledge, share knowledge around the organisation, and use that knowledge to best effect.

Potential challenges in the deployment of a knowledge management environment in SAI include: rigid company process imposed by 'group' organisations, strict client regulation of the control and exchange of data and products, about data security and confidentiality issues, and industry regulations that define who can hold authority.

This study includes various steps and the process followed to deploy KM in an aerospace industry which is a diverse industry, and recommendations given for effective knowledge management system.

Title: Knowledge Management @ Perot Systems: Role of KM in Project Management Scenario
By: Mr. Raveesh S      Guide: Mr. Manu Rajan

Project Management has been growing as a discipline for decades. From basic task planning to modern complexity management, it has evolved with the society. Today, project management is integrated in many companies and governmental organisations with strategy, via the portfolio or program management, and with the other departments, like manufacturing, human resources, legal and financial. It is a question of managing multiple products, multiple projects with interrelated resources from one or many companies, under the multiple constraints of the customers, the legal environment and the financial and market objectives.

In this context, knowledge is a key point for improvement and performance. Namely, projects are temporary, which means that they start and they finish. When they start, it is better to be able to reuse previous experience, in order to repeat best practices or to avoid common tricks. When they finish, it is better to be able to save or to share these best practices and tricks.

This study is about Knowledge Management (KM) performed at Perot Systems Consulting and Application Solutions (CAS) Bangalore and Noida.

Title: Scientific Collaboration in Academic Institutions: A case study with Indian Institute of Science publications
By: Ms. Krishna Ramya      Guide: Ms. Anuradha KT

The structure of scientific collaboration networks of the publications of the Indian Institute of Science for a span of 11 years from 1996-2006 is investigated using Bibexcel software as an analytical tool for the data derived from the Web of Science database. The study analyses the author productivity, discipline-wise & Institution-wise collaboration and national & international collaboration. It is observed from the analysis that large numbers of research publications are collaborative in nature and also institutional-wise collaboration is more as compared to other types of collaborations. There is a steady growth in the collaboration during the study period.

Title: Developing Live Chat Portal for Library Services in J.R.D. Tata Memorial Library@IISc.
By: Mr. Surulinathi      Guide: Mr. Filbert Minj and Mr. Venkadesan

Since the late 1990s, Libraries have experimented with technology to provide traditional library services in the online environment. The use of e-mail, chat and other online media to provide reference services has presented numerous challenges and opportunities. As a result of these collaborations, librarians must often work with users outside of their primary patron base. Collaborative online reference services have brought together librarians from different environment, including public, academic and special libraries.

Livechat@JRDTML Web Portal will allow our Library Users to review of their work request on-line from any computer that is connected to the Network. Online chat, RSS feeds - we never imagined that these technologies would impact on information services in the ways they have and we can begin to imagine the greater changes that tomorrow will bring in the world of the virtual reference library. The project is to help librarians understand and appreciate chat reference users, to present practical tools for serving this population and to stimulate further discussion and inquiry into teen use of chat reference services. I believe that responsive service to this population is crucial to the future development and growth of chat reference services.

Title: Creating user interface for searching journal archival using Datapark search engine
By: Ms. Dipti Kumari Chaurasia     Guide: Mr. Filbert Minj

As the universe of documents has overwhelmed by the amount of information that can be found. So, it's difficult to search relevant information from a large collection of document. To solve this problem the search engine has been developed which provide search interface that can be able to search multiple document collections simultaneously. Also, searching for document surrogates is losing favor as more documents are digitized and distributed in full-text form. Availability of full-text makes it possible for document components such as tables, illustrations, citations, and references components that traditionally remained outside the scope of document searching to be considered and exploited by search interface designers.

In this project we are creating common search interface for Journal Archival. After comparing few popular search engines, we came to a conclusion to use Datapark search engine for this project because it provides full text indexing and also many other features, which is suitable for this project.
